Pioneers from other places often built the towns in this country. Some came from other states, like William B. Howard. He came from Kentucky to buy up land in Lee's Summit and founded the Town of Strother, named for his wife, Maria. In 1865, however, the town was renamed Lee's Summit after the passing of popular postmaster, John Graves Lea. The alternate spelling is said to be due to misspelling on train signs by the painters.
Another settler, lumber company owner R. A. Long, built on Lee's Summit Real Estate just outside town in 1912. His estate, called Longview, consisted of 42 buildings which exist today.

Together they saved most of the Southern sympathizers in the town from being burned out of their homes. Younger was later arrested for a bank robbery in Minnesota. Upon his release, he returned to town, living an exemplary life until his death in 1916. Other famous residents include models Audrey and Angela Lindvall, jazz musicians Pat and Mike Metheny, athletes Mark Curp and Bill Kenney among others.
